Start with size, not style
The size you need affects both how a rug works in your room and how much it costs. Measure the space before you browse, and mark the outline on the floor with tape if you can. Decide whether the rug should sit under furniture, in front of it, or along a hallway.
The effect of size on price shows clearly in this catalogue. The Evelina Hand Tufted Wool Rug in 9 ft by 12 ft is listed at $979. Smaller rugs from the same retailer, such as the Carmen Traditional Performance Rug (3 ft 11 in by 5 ft 7 in) at $164.25 and the Zinnia Performance Rug (3 ft 3 in by 5 ft) at $209.25, cost far less. When you compare prices, compare rugs of the same size. Otherwise a cheap-looking listing may simply be a smaller rug.
Runners are a separate shape to consider for halls and kitchens. The Amira Performance Rug comes in 2 ft 7 in by 7 ft 6 in at $164.25. The Astor Floral Hand Tufted Wool Rug comes in 2 ft 6 in by 9 ft 9 in at $261.75.
Types you will see
Product names in this category often tell you the construction or intended use:
- Performance rugs, such as the Carmen, Zinnia and Amira. The term is a retailer label, so read the listing to see what it covers, including cleaning instructions.
- Hand tufted wool rugs, such as the Astor Floral and the Evelina.
- Outdoor rugs, such as the Kona Hand Tufted Outdoor Rug, the Poppies Hand Tufted Outdoor Rug and the Merida Striped Outdoor Rug. Choose one of these if the rug will go on a patio or porch, or anywhere it may get wet.
Match the type to the room. A rug for a busy entryway has different demands from one in a bedroom.
Price bands
The 3,679 rugs listed range from $9.03 to $7,199.20, with a typical price of about $1,268. They split into four bands of roughly equal size:
- Under $263 (923 products): mostly small rugs, doormat sizes and runners. Examples include the Kona outdoor rug (1 ft 8 in by 2 ft 6 in) at $63.20, the Merida striped outdoor runner (2 ft by 8 ft) at $134.25, and the Poppies outdoor rug at $239.20.
- $263 to $899 (921 products): larger sizes and longer runners. This is a sensible band if you want a mid-size rug for a bedroom or a spot under a coffee table.
- $899 to $1,972 (922 products): this band includes the typical price. Room-size rugs appear here, such as the 9 ft by 12 ft Evelina wool rug at $979.
- $1,972 to $7,199 (913 products): the largest sizes and the most expensive constructions. Spend at this level only when you know the exact size and type you need.
Brands in the catalogue
Ballard Designs has the most listings, with 2,500 rugs starting from $11.99. Grandin Road follows with 871 rugs from $23.20. Lorena Canals has 259 from $139, and Loloi Rugs has 25 from $178.
Smaller ranges come from Oeuf (12, from $260), Haba (5, from $208.99), Spot on Square (4, from $180), Sweet Potato (1, from $215.38) and DwellStudio (1, from $350). Port & Company has a single listing at $9.03, the lowest price in the category. Check that listing carefully to confirm it is the kind of rug you expect.
Sales and where to buy
Of the 3,679 rugs, 3,333 are currently on sale. A sale tag is the norm here rather than a special event, so judge the price itself instead of the size of the discount. Listings come from stores including Ballard Designs, Grandin Road, Albee Baby, ShirtSpace and 1-800lighting.com. Many items, including all the examples above, are sold by only one store. That limits direct comparison, so compare similar sizes and types across brands instead.
Common mistakes
- Buying too small. A rug that floats in the middle of a room can look lost.
- Comparing across sizes. A lower price often just means a smaller rug.
- Using an indoor rug outside. Choose a rug sold as outdoor for patios and porches.
- Trusting the discount. With most items on sale, the percentage off tells you little.
- Ignoring care instructions. Check how a rug should be cleaned before you buy, especially for kitchens, kids' rooms and homes with pets.
When to pay more
Paying more makes sense when you need a large room-size rug, because size alone pushes the price up. It can also be worth it when you want a specific construction, such as hand tufted wool, or when the rug will sit in a main living space you use every day. For a hallway, doorway or occasional-use room, the lowest band usually has suitable options.
Checklist
- Measure the space and decide where the rug edges should sit
- Choose the shape: rectangle, runner or small accent size
- Pick the type: performance, wool, or outdoor
- Compare prices only between rugs of the same size
- Check which price band your size falls into
- Read cleaning and care details in the listing
- Ignore the discount percentage and compare final prices
- Confirm the store, delivery and return terms before ordering
