Start with what you actually need
This category covers a lot of ground: 1,542 products priced from $10.99 to $4,250, with a typical price of about $136. It includes tennis racquets, balls and clothing from brands such as Wilson, Babolat, HEAD, Yonex, Solinco, Tourna, adidas, Nike, On Running and Lucky in Love.
It also includes gear for related sports. You will find pickleball paddles, such as the Selkirk Omni Widebody Pickleball Paddles Hydro, and platform tennis paddles, such as the Xenon Vector Pro Spin Max v2 370G Platform Tennis Paddles. Check the sport named in the product title before you buy, because equipment for one game is not a substitute for equipment for another.
Racquets
Racquets are usually the biggest single purchase. Racquets in this catalogue include:
- Yonex EZONE Alpha 100 275g Blast Blue (8th Gen) Tennis Racquets at $165
- Tecnifibre T-Fight 270 Tennis Racquets at $229
- Volkl Vostra V7 Tennis Racquets at $239.99
- HEAD Gravity Tour Zverev Limited Edition 2026 Tennis Racquets at $249
- Wilson Defyer 100 V1 Tennis Racquets at $299
When comparing racquets, focus on weight, head size, balance and grip size. Lighter frames are generally easier to swing. Heavier frames tend to suit players with longer, faster swings. Grip size affects comfort and control, so check which size you need rather than guessing. If you are unsure, try a friend's racquet or a demo before you commit.
Limited editions and new releases often cost more than the standard version. Before paying extra, check whether the frame differs from the regular model or only the finish does.
Also budget for strings and grips. A new racquet may need restringing sooner than you expect, and overgrips wear out with regular play.
Balls
Balls are a recurring cost, so buying in bulk can make sense if you play often. One example is the Dunlop Stage 2 Orange Training Ball 24 Cans Tennis Balls at $60.95. Training balls like these are meant for development and coaching rather than standard adult match play. Make sure the ball type matches who is playing and how.
Clothing
The clothing brands in this catalogue start at different price points. adidas starts from $27.95, Nike from $34.95, On Running from $38.50 and Lucky in Love from $59. Look for clothing that lets you move freely and suits the conditions you play in. Sizing varies between brands, so check each brand's size guide instead of assuming you are the same size everywhere.
Price bands
The catalogue splits into four bands of roughly equal size:
- $10.99 to $55 (396 products): The entry level. Several brands start here, including HEAD from $11, Wilson from $13.95, Solinco from $14.50, Babolat from $16, Tourna from $18.95 and Yonex from $21. This band suits smaller items and topping up supplies.
- $55 to $90 (388 products): Bulk ball packs such as the Dunlop 24-can training set sit here, and Lucky in Love clothing starts in this range.
- $90 to $189.95 (384 products): The typical price of about $136 falls in this band. It includes the Yonex EZONE Alpha 100 275g racquet at $165.
- $189.95 to $4,250 (363 products): Most of the example racquets and paddles sit here, from the Tecnifibre T-Fight 270 at $229 to the Selkirk pickleball paddle at $299.99. The band stretches a long way, so look closely at what you get at the top end.
When to pay more
Paying more makes most sense when you play regularly and know what you want from a racquet. A frame that suits your game is worth more than one that looks good on paper. Pay more for clothing only if the fit and comfort justify it for how often you play. If you play occasionally, the lower and middle bands are a sensible place to start.
Common mistakes
- Buying a paddle for the wrong sport because it appears alongside tennis gear.
- Choosing a racquet by brand or player endorsement rather than weight, head size and grip.
- Guessing grip size or clothing size.
- Forgetting the ongoing cost of strings, grips and balls.
- Paying for a limited edition without checking how it differs from the standard model.
Deals and where to buy
At the time of writing, 598 of the 1,542 products are on sale, which is close to four in ten. The example products are each listed at a single store, Holabird Sports. When an item is only available from one retailer, you cannot compare it against other shops, so sale pricing is your main way to save. If you are not in a hurry, it is worth watching for a discount.
Checklist
- Confirm the product is for tennis and not pickleball or platform tennis.
- For racquets, check weight, head size, balance and grip size.
- Compare the standard and limited edition versions before paying extra.
- Budget for strings, grips and balls.
- Match training balls to the player and the type of play.
- Check each brand's size guide for clothing.
- Look for a sale price before buying at full price.
